Where else have we heard your voice?

I’m an on-camera actor and have done many guest starring / recurring roles on TV. I’ve also done a lot of dubbing for foreign movies and TV shows on Netflix / Amazon / AppleTV… If you’re an audiobook fan and you suddenly hear my voice in your living room while you’re watching TV, you’re not imagining it.

What do you always have in the booth?

When I used to record regularly outside my own studio, I used to leave a pair of recording pants there (quiet, easy). It was just easier. Now, I’m at home, lucky if I’m wearing pants at all. I’ve got little coffee straws around the booth to do vocal exercises with, but not much else.

How did you come to performing audiobooks?

Audiobooks were part of our family culture. Roadtrips, stories in bed – maybe my mom didn’t feel like reading to me herself, but I always had a “book on tape” playing. When I graduated from acting conservatory, my brilliant agent matched me up with the equally brilliant Claudia Howard, of Recorded Books… she gave me my first book, and kept me busy for decades after. I’m part of the old guard… I’ve been here since real paper, since clamshell cases and cassettes, since before CDs. I brought the first iPad into Deyan Audio, and now everyone records from them.

Anything else you’d like a listener to know?

I never thought all of those years in drama school would land me completely alone in an audio booth. Acting is usually a very viscerally social art form. We are collaborators. We create in groups and bring storytelling as a team. But audiobooks are different. When I’m performing an audiobook, I’m acting for just you. It feels like an intimate experience to the listener because it is. I am all alone in a booth, telling just you a story to transport you, move you, make you laugh, or cry, or pulse race, or blood boil, or palms sweat, or jaw drop, or sides ache. Just my voice, and an entire troupe of actors from my mind to yours. I find that space sacred. I am so proud to tell you stories.
