What do you always have in the booth?

A couple essential things in my booth: my mug warmer so my coffee is always hot, my Kool Tie neck cooler (so I can stay cool in the hot summer months, a cute little dragon that hangs onto my monitor, and a bucket of Quench gum (fixes mouth noise and tastes great).

How did you come to performing audiobooks?

I can’t remember a time in my childhood where I wasn’t listening to audiobooks. I started with the Fischer Price abridged classics (look these up if you haven’t heard of them), which came with their own graphic novel of the story. I listened to them enough that I had them memorized. I’d go to bed each night with an audiobook playing on my cassette player. When I grew up and went into acting professionally, I hadn’t considered audiobooks or even voice over as part of that career. Yet I always had an audiobook as a “companion” to my traffic-y drives to auditions. A few years into my LA acting career I realized that being a voice actor could and should be a part of my acting experience! For a long time I did about a book a year, but a couple of years ago I leaned into audiobooks and am now thrilled to narrate several a month. I love that my career has taken me full circle, and now my books are a part of other kids’ entertainment, or are helping people through tough times… or even just long car rides.

Anything else you’d like a listener to know?

Sir Patrick Stewart narrated what I consider to be the definitive version of A Christmas Carol, and I used to listen to it on repeat, no matter the month. So when I had the chance to MAYBE meet him, I wrote him a card telling him how much that particular performance (and yes, I could also have talked about Star Trek: TNG) affected me. I carried the card around for a while, hoping I might bump into him, but no dice. If anybody out there knows him, please send him my love and appreciation!

I believe that when a listener chooses an audiobook, they’re actually bringing the narrator and words into an intimate and vulnerable place. You’re letting someone tell you a story, much like how your parents or caregivers might have read to you as a kid. It’s an honor to me to create worlds with my voice and breath for you to imagine and inhabit. Thanks for trusting me with the stories you choose to listen to!
