Water! Lots of it. Also, a pillow I can hug. It masks my stomach when it growls unexpectedly, and also makes me feel good. Sometimes coffee because obviously! And my kazoo – it helps open things up vocally (and sometimes you just need to lighten things up).
I bothered a friend! He's a playwright/actor who also narrated audiobooks. He couldn't do one book because he had to fly away for work. He told the producers they should consider me. I auditioned and… didn't get that one. My voice was too young at that time for that particular book. But he recommended me again to another producer for another project. This time it was at Penguin Random House, and it was for Cutting For Stone by Abraham Verghese. I got that one, received an Earphones Award for it, and that book launched me into the audiobook world. Moral of the story – don't be afraid to bother your busy friends!
Stories are the great connector of humanity. They can make us feel less alone. We laugh, we cry, and everything in-between. And by the end, we get to see something we maybe never have before. And sometimes, even feel seen. If we let them, stories can also give us the courage and path (emotional or literal) to make our world a better place.
I’ve had the honor of hearing from listeners about all the above. For me to be a part of that kind of endeavor is truly a joy, in the deepest sense of that word.
