How did you come to performing audiobooks?

I always wanted to be an audiobook narrator. I took lessons with Ollie Wyman, then Laura Albert (JT LeRoy) asked me to narrate her novel Sarah, set in West Virginia. Jayme Mattler directed me on that project and opened the door for me at Apple News. I’ve had great mentors and advocates including Gabra Zackman, and Susan Moon has invited me to audition on projects she’s producing. Iris McElroy invited me to narrate Henry Tudor Must Die which was full of accents and characters which was a blast. I love getting to play in the booth.

Anything else you’d like a listener to know?

I believe in stories, and I believe in the wonderful uniqueness of each human voice. I’ve learned so much about precision and deft turns through my work as a narrator — how one moment takes a quick turn and changes utterly. Or how two characters can be in very different places on the same page. I love the expansion that embodying these changes brings me. And I believe that artists — real human artists — giving voice to real human writing is part of what makes our human experience joyful and real. There may be a place for AI but it’s not in the audio booth.
