Transcript

Hi, I’m Colby Elliott and the audiobook I’ve chosen for you today is Stephen Marche’s On Writing and Failure. This is a breezy 1 hour and 55 minutes and it tells the story of why writers and all artists really need to embrace rejection and failure and I think it’s marvelous. It is read by the author yet he is not a professional narrator. He has the kind of reading voice that has been tempered by hundreds of bookstore and lecture hall readings, and it is gloriously workmanlike. If your favorite narrator feeds you a sumptuous meal, Stephen Marche gives you an amazing, dependable, well-grilled burger. He tells the story of many great authors and how they failed to achieve immortality or even lasting success and ends many of his statements with, "If that happened to them, why should you be any different?" He is by my estimation that favorite teacher who could be absolutely real with you and you love them for it. And at just shy of two hours, you can read it numerous times so it sinks in. As an artist, persevere, endure, but know that rejection and failure are part of the landscape you journey upon. Happy listening.
