As a narrator, I listen to a lot of books. I just finished listening to The Poet Empress by Shen Tao, beautifully narrated by Katharine Chin and Eric Yang. It is one of those stories written so well that when you first listen to it, it pulls you into the complex world of the imperial emperor’s reign in the sixth century.
It tells a tale of a 16-year-old village girl who decides to put herself in the lottery of a concubine selection process for the wicked second son of the emperor. It has magic. It pushes your emotions so deeply. You feel the emotion of our young heroine enduring pain, anger, and resilience despite all that she has gone through. So check it out. It is a must-listen.
